
I am a Professor of Sociology at the Department of Social Sciences at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. From 2019 to 2024 I was the leader of the research group CIMT that investigated the chances and challenges of involving citizens in political decisions in the context of sustainable mobility transitions. In my research I am interested in the legitimacy and effectiveness of democratic systems with a focus on citizen participation, sustainability & mobility as well as AI for democratic processes.

From October 2019 until August 2025 I was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the Department of Social Sciences at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. In August 2025 I was appointed as full professor of Sociology. Before I was responsible for the management of the Düsseldorf Institute for Internet and Democracy (DIID) as well as the PhD programme NRW Forschungskolleg Online-Partizipation at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. Before coming to Düsseldorf I have worked at University College London and the University of Oxford. After my studies of Social Sciences (mainly Media and Communication) in Berlin and Leicester I obtained a doctorate from the Oxford Internet Institute of the University of Oxford in 2013.
